The text of this song, by Victor Hugo, is from Ruy Blas, Act 2, Scene 1, first published and represented in 1838 with this setting by Auguste Pilati. This "Chant des Lavandières" has subsequently also been set to music by many other composers: Emmanuel Chabrier, Léo Delibes, Victor Massé, Ethelbert Nevin, Anton Rubinstein, Camille Saint-Saens, Louis Spohr etc.
