From the 9 stanzas of the poem XXI published by Victor Hugo in "Les Champs du crépuscule" in 1833, Jules Bordier selected the 5th and 9th. This poem which starts with "Hier, la nuit d'été", has also been set to music by Gaston Carraud (1890) who selected the first 3 stanzas, whereas Alain Jacques, in his setting, selected the 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th.
