The original title of this song was “Shchedryk” – which talks about a sparrow and prosperous year that families can look forward to. It was first sung on 13th of January 1916 in Ukraine and on 5th of October 1921 at Carnegie Hall in US.
In 1936, the new Lyrics of Carols of the Bells was written by Peter J. Wilhousky based on the original Shchedryk melody. After being copyrighted, the song became known as "Carol of the Bells” and were usually sung during Christmas season.” by http://christmascarols.365greetings.com
