Edmund Sears (1810-1876) was a Unitarian minister and author, active in Massachusetts. His words "It came upon the midnight clear" were first published in Boston in 1849 and have found their way into many 20th and 21st century hymnals. In Britain his words are usually sung to the tune "Noel", adapted by Sir Arthur Sullivan from a traditional English melody. In the USA the usual setting is "Carol" by Richard Willis, a tune first appearing in his "Church Chorals and Choir Studies" (1850). The association of words and Willis's tune seems to date from the 1878 Hymnal of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
