This is a seven-part anthem for SSAATBB with optional organ reduction. According to the main source it was a 'commencement song', that is, a university graduation exercise. John Tomkins (half-brother of the better known Thomas Tomkins) evidently composed it as part of the requirements for the MusB degree, which he obtained ifrom Cambrridge University in 1608. The anthem was probably performed at the commencement (graduation) ceremony in Great St Mary's Church Cambridge, which was where such ceremonies were held before the Senate House was completed in the 1720s.
