Originally concieved for an all-metal woodwind trio of alto flute, baritone saxophone, and contrabass sarrussophone (the latter two mainstreamed to bass clarinet and contrabassoon…an alternate part for baritone sax is included), Canonic Circus was written in lieu of a trip to an actual circus in the city. It’s three "rings" are surreal depictions of standard circus acts. The rollicking "Clowns and Dancing Animals" is an off kilter parade of same, while the tense "Tightrope Walker Over Lions" takes the listener on a nervous trip across the G-tuned high wire. The "Flying Trapeze Bros." are a competitive group, each constantly trying to outdo (or trip up) the others. Ultimately they come together, thrill the audience with electrifying acrobatics, and gracefully descend their ropes to take final bows as one. TA-DAH!!
