The title refers to the expensive nature of the three instruments called for in this piece. These are the last canons I wrote before moving on to music consisting of free counterpoint [or at least not consisting exclusively of canons.] The Largo consists of two different canons on the same opening. Then comes a playful canon, and then a recycling of canon #109, which was composed following a One World Symphony performance of Berlioz' Symphony Fantastic [recall the call/answer passage for English Horn in that symphony]. Three canons unlike any other I've written follow before a finale canon wraps it up. Edit on 06 June 2010: Newly formatted score and improved mp3!
