The folk dance, Canarios, may have come from the Canary Islands although its exact origin is unknown. Gaspar Sanz, a famous guitarist, included it in "Instruccion de musica sobre la guitarra española" published in Zaragoça in 1674 and Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz published a version three years later in Madrid.

This fascinating exercise in hemiola rhythms will have your toes tapping. Metric stress is indicated by note grouping. Great care must be taken, especially in the last seven bars, to separate the 6/8 rhythms from the 3/4 when played together.
