This short hymn-like tune was composed in May 2007 and I decided to name it after the Yorkshire village of Burnsall which is in the Dales just north of Ilkley and Bolton Abbey.

I wrote the tune essentially as a "back-to-basics" revision of four-part harmony. I have tried to avoid - (and hopefully succeeded) - those parallel octaves and fifths which the textbooks instruct us to shun. I have also tried to use a number of 1st inversions as well as cadential 6/4s. It is always a challenge to do this kind of exercise but I can recommend it!

The score here is for a brass octet: 3 cornets, tenor horn, baritone, trombone, euphonium and E flat bass.
