A gently romantic, almost wistful, main theme insists on being heard over increasing protests from the lower strings (double basses, enjoy yourselves!). They all agree on a unison couple of bars, which lead to a C major quasi-march in which the violas and cellos attempt to carry of a similarly romantic tune to an orthodox pizzicato accpt from the violins and basses. The whole things ends up somewhat skewed before the main theme returns in slightly modified form.
