The national anthem of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland,’’God Save the Queen’’ or ’’God Save the King’’, has its origins in the 17th Century. The authorship of the words and the melody is not certain:the names of possible authors include the English director of music, John Bull(1563-1628), and the English poet and composer, Henry Carey(1687-1743). The anthem was first performed on the 28th of September 1745 at theatres in Drury Lane and Covent Garden, after the army of King George the Second had been defeated by Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Prestonpans, near Edinburgh. Over 140 composers, including Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms, have incorporated this tune in their compositions.
