This hymn-tune first appeared in Ravenscroft's "Whole Book of Psalmes" (1621), where it was set to Psalms 16 and 64 and entitled "Bristol Tune". The rhythmic values used in modern hymnals can vary and I have added small note values in the score to assist with this. The score presents the hymn in its normal format and then in a faux-bourdon setting, with the tune in the tenor. The descant is almost the same in each version.
The words of this hymn were written by Henry Ernest Hardy (1869-1946) who took the name "Father Andrew" in 1896, when he founded the Society of the Divine Compassion, a religious community.
