In 1995 as a result of attending Diana Burrell's composition class at the COMA summer school I wrote a piece called Bright Sun for wind quintet. The title derives something from a walk I took one day that year round the Yorkshire Sculpture Park under a blazing sun (we were also rehearsing a piece called 'Dark Sun' by Stephen Montague at the same time!!). Bright Sun involved the 'annihilation' of a simple tune and this same tune was used as the basis for 'Bright Sun 2'.
After a brief introduction for piano and marimba there are a number of short sections where various instrumental groups hint at the 'Bright Sun' theme but never explicitly state it. Most of these sections are 'interrupted' or terminated in some way by the piano (aided by horns and trumpets) who have other ideas. Eventually the piano relents and plays the theme, but very slowly and rhythmically distorted. After this the whole ensemble heads off joyfully in a different direction but is pulled up at the very end by a final piano 'terminating' chord.
