This 2nd movement of the opus 88 string quintet omits trumpets, lower brass and timpani in keeping with its more tranquil mood. It starts off with a horn duet supported by violas and cellos, then after 31 measures begins an Allegretto section in A featuring oboes, later repeated as a variation in Presto tempo. The opening theme recurs several times before concluding with meditative strings and solo clarinet.
