This ongoing series of pieces is for double wind quintet with optional contrabassoon or double bass. I came across a book called Heaven's Breath by Lyall Watson (subtitled “A Natural History of the Wind") and found that one of the appendices listed the names of air currents from all around the world. The sound of these names provided the catalyst I needed to start creating a set of pieces, incorporating to greater or lesser extent some idiomatic musical elements indigenous to each wind.
