In addition to being the most prominent English Roman Catholic hymn writers of the post Vatican 2 era Damian Lundy FSC was the founder of St Cassian’s Retreat Centre for young people at Kintbury in Berkshire, UK. This lyric, which was found amongst his papers after he died, is based on chapter 1 of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, which had been the inspiration of the Retreat Centre’s summer programme, the ’Yes Weeks’.
Damian, who mentored me in hymn writing, wrote a number of songs in a folk idiom, using a minor key and waltz time. In setting this piece to music I have used this framework to create a melody and harmonies that I feel would have met his approval.
Being scripturally based this piece is suitable for congregations of all Christian denominations. It is particularly appropriate for confirmations and adult baptisms.
Damian’s lyrics are used with the kind permission of the Trustees of the De La Salle Order of Great Britain, of which he was a member.
