"Blessed Assurance" was written in 1873 by blind hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby and composer Phoebe P. Knapp. According to Crosby’s biographer, when her friend Phoebe Knapp played a new melody she had just composed, she asked Crosby, "What do you think the tune says? Crosby replied, "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine." Publication in a New York City religious magazine helped popularize what became one of the most beloved hymns of all time. [Source: Wikipedia]
