My daughter Valerie's favorite Christmas carol is the melancholy, but delightful "In the Bleak Midwinter" originally composed by Gustav Holst. Since it departs from the usual SATB harmonies and mood I've retitled it "Bleak Midwinter". I did a bit of word-painting with the chorus and added swift string passages to represent driven snow. Going through this arrangement creation I've decided that "In the Bleak Midwinter" is now my favorite carol also and I dedicate it to Valerie, with love from Dad.
