Historians of American musical theatre often consider "The Black Crook" the first Broadway musical. The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of "The Black Crook" is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director.
This is a unique concert band arrangement of one of those piano pieces, a lively galop that has musical as well as historical interest. It's particularly appropriate for outdoor summer concerts, or as a curtain-raiser, finale, or encore for concerts at any time of the year. Written for an adult community band, it's also suitable for a college band or an adventurous high school wind ensemble.
The audio clip is a complete outdoor summer concert performance by the Peninsula Symphonic Winds.
