Giulio Romolo Caccini (1550 – 10 December 1618).



Thought to be born in Rome, Caccini was one of the founders of the genre of opera. 

It is known that he studied a wide variety of instruments including the lute, harp and viol under the guidance of Giovanni Animuccia.

Later Caccini was much in demand as a tenor.



In about 1574 the Grand Duke of Tuscany was so impressed with his talent that he accompanied the young Caccini to Florence (Firenze) for further study.



While in Florence Caccini became closely associated with the ‘Camerata’ of Count Giovanni Bardi, a Florentine group that produced the earliest operas. Here Caccini's influence was considerable with his operas and music being composed and performed by the group. In particular his opera Euridice.


Caccini died in Florance in 1618. He is buried in the church of St. Annunziata.
