’It is never right to play "Ragtime" fast.’ Thus quoth Scott Joplin at the head of the score of his "Eugenia". Good rules are noted for having exceptions, and this piece from the cycle "The Seasons in Ragtime" (available as a set: see also "Pretty Ring Time" and "In the Bleak") certainly seems to be an exception to Joplin’s edict. It is the only one of its composer’s works that would survive (maybe benefit from) arrangement for big band, or performance with a rhythm section.
