"Aus tiefer Not", a hymn by Martin Luther, was published in 1524. He wrote both the words (based on Psalm 130) and the music. The hymn became very popular among Luther's followers and was sung at his funeral.

J.S.Bach based a church cantata on the hymn - "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir", BWV 38. It was first performed in 1724 - 200 years after the hymn was first published. He also wrote two major organ works based on it: BWV 686 and BWV 687. Mendelssohn based his third Organ Sonata on this chorale.
