I was always curious about listening to the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) which was very often vilified in the western world, both, as to text and melody. Now, that I had the opportunity to do so, I, personally, see nothing offensive in it, on the contrary, I find that both, text and melody, where adequate to the circumstances under which this anthem was created. I think it would also fit the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), because the conditions in Western Germany were no different than those prevailing in her eastern counterpart. Ideologies apart, I admire the spirit and determination of rebuilding, as expressed in the beginning line: "Resurrected out of ruins." The longing for peace and harmony with other nations is also patent, as in "No mother shall mourn her son."
Since I had only access to the melody, I harmonised it according to my own taste and set it for piano and mixed four-voiced choir.
