This work is based on Armenian folk melodies. There are several versions of this piece, the original is for trombone and piano. This version for symphony orchestra has been recorded with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra for release on Opus One Records CD. Armenian melodies are in the idiom of Eastern music, often modal or in the minor mode, with often irregular rhythmic patterns. Each folk melody is followed by a short transicion passage that sets the rhythm and tonality of the next melody.
