A nice little solo for a trombonist who's good at sustained lines at low dynamic levels, and who knows the meaning of the word "legato" (which, incidentally, doesn't appear once in the score). The accompaniment, scored for a string orchestra, mostly consists of repetitions of a simple five-bar phrase at different pitches (in different keys?), and the trombone comments on that phrase, rather than having a tune as such - hence the title "Arioso".
