Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. One of the leading French composers of his generation, his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers.

Fauré’s family were cultured though not particularly musical. They noticed Gabriel's musical talents and at the age of nine, he was sent to the music school École Niedermeyer de Paris , where he was trained as a church organist and choirmaster.

His teacher ,the composer Camille Saint-Saëns, became a lifelong friend.

Fauré became a founding member of the Société Nationale de Musique, formed in 1871. This promoted new French music and many of Fauré's works were first presented at the Society's concerts.

During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from increasing deafness. In contrast with the charm of his earlier music, his works from this period are sometimes elusive and withdrawn in character, and at other times turbulent and impassioned.

Apré un rêve Poem by Romain Bussine

Reviens, reviens, reviens
Reviens ô nuit mysterieuse

.

After a dream.

In a sleep that charmed your image
I dreamed of happiness, ardent mirage
Your eyes were softer, your voice pure and sonorous
You glowed like a sky lit by dawn
You called me and I left the earth
To run away with you towards the light
The heavens opened their clouds for us
Unknown splendors, divine glimmers between views
Alas, alas, sad awakening from dreams
I call to you, oh night, give me back your lies
Come back, come back, come back
Come back, oh mysterious night
