The Sleeping Beauty, composed in 1889, was the second of Tchaikovsky’s three ballets. Although his first ballet, Swan Lake, composed in 1876 at the age of 35, had not been a great success, the composer readily accepted this new commission for the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg. He based the ballet on the Grimm brothers’ version of the Sleeping Beauty story but he also included other fairy-tale characters including: Puss in Boots, Cinderella, The White Cat and Little Red Riding Hood. In Tchaikovsky’s version the lead characters are named the Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré. At the gala rehearsal of the completed ballet in 1889 his Imperial Majesty Tsar Alexander III was not impressed, but the audience were appreciative and, by 1914, the ballet had been given 200 times by the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet. The third and final act depicting the ‘Royal Wedding’, is followed by a two-part coda of which Apothéose is the second part, and the final music of the ballet. In this all the characters come together with a tableau depicting the Sun God (Helios) and King Louis XIV. The music is based on the popular French song ‘Vive Henri IV’ which originally celebrated King Henry IV of France. Tchaikovsky created this apotheosis – the grand climax – as a majestic march.
