Tchaikowsky dedicated his first and most famous string quartet to his friend the professor of botany, Sergey Rachinsky, who wrote a libretto for an opera which Piotr Ilyich never completed . The two remained good friends, however.The Andante Cantabile movement from this quartet has become more well-known than the rest of the quartet and many arrangements have been made of it. This one for woodwind quartet is transcribed in the original key of D major
