When I read it, suddenly all the bits of the jigsaw fell into place and it became the pivot around which the whole of the piece revolves - a setting of English verse surrounded by the traditional Latin text of the requiem mass. Roger McGough wrote Last Lullaby years before Rachel Nickell was murdered on Wimbledon Common, yet anyone familiar with the circumstances of her death will appreciate why it seems to have an uncanny significance to this tragic event.
