The words to this early Christian hymn, written in 1772 by the English poet and clergyman John Newton, have been associated with more than 20 melodies. In 1835 they were set by William Walker, an American composer, to the hymn tune “New Britain,” which is the version most commonly sung today. The message of hope, forgiveness, and redemption through the mercy of God is central in this piano solo arrangement, which uses the flowing movement of New Age styling to allow the performer to communicate expressively without words. 5 pages. Intermediate level. Included in the “It Is Well” songbook. Also available for early intermediate piano duet.
