Richard Aldington made valuable and substantial contributions to literature as a novelist,poet,biographer and translator.I was most fortunate in being introduced to his work by none other than his ex-secretary,
the Australian writer,Alister Kershaw.who in turn became a close friend.How well I recall arriving at Alister's cottage and having a delicious glass of Sancerre placed in one hand and Richard's Complete Poems in the other!! It was love at first sight with "Amalfi" and it somehow reminded me of Ovid,Catullus and Sappho.
This song can also be sung by a mezzo-soprano an octave above and should gradually shift from a marcato opening to a legato when bar 23 is reached.It would be a good idea to begin the first words very softly and a shade slower than the metronome mark indicated.Then by all means increase the tempo slightly at bar 45.The important thing to keep in mind is that this should be sung and played "con amore".
