Allison’s room is a modern post-romantic piece of program music for large orchestra, consisting out of five non-interrupted movements. Allison, a little girl, and her parents have recently moved to an old house. The music depicts Allison in her bed in her room, and as listener you are an observer.
I. Room with child.
The parents arrived with their little daughter, Allison, at their new bought home, an old house. In the evening Allison goes to bed in her room. In the beginning the room is calm and the child lies quietly in her bed. But as the night falls, the room becomes threatening.
II. Shadows at night.
As the room gets more mysterious, Allison is tense. She sees/imagines threatening ghosts and her toys becoming alive and dancing around her. The spooky room makes her frightened.
III. Crying and comforting.
The poor child is sad and cries, and the mother runs up the stairs and comforts her. The child gets calm and falls peacefully asleep.
IV. Battle.
Allison sees/imagines her room becoming a battlefield: the toys are fighting each other to death. The child gets horrified and very sad. Poor Allison …
V. Quiet room
Quietness returns in the room but many questions are left: what did happen to Allison ? where is she ? was it just a nightmare ? or is the room haunted ? It remains an open question, to be answered by the listener.
Please do not listen through MIDI but enjoy the MP3 based on a digital recording made in Sibelius 4.1 with Kontakt Player Gold. This digital performance is also uploaded on my YouTube-channel with the score moving; feel free to make a comment there.
