Program Note: The eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October - Halloween. It is at the beginning of the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
In this short orchestral piece, the above sub-titled programmatic events of All Hallows' Eve follow each other in evocative orchestral textures and reset various medieval liturgical chants to suggest the ancient rituals of the celebration.
The music proceeds accordingly: The Incantations of the Witches are heavily intoned in the low brass and strings in an antiphonal, call and response. A pealing of bells summons the Souls in Purgatory. Plain-song prayers are offered by the children and then by the adults. A quote from Dies Irae brings in the harsh, rhythmic, dissonant music of the Vengeful Ghosts. The Last Judgement gradually builds to a huge climax, then diminishes to nothing…
