The Hebrew word aliya means ascent, ride, pilgrimage (especially to Jerusalem), immigration (to Israel). I tried to express the awe one feels upon reaching the land of Israel, hence the solemn mood. At that time I did not even dream about getting to know the modern State of Israel by my own experience; I was rather influenced by the book Exodus by Leon Uris, which I had read at that time. I showed the piano version to the Mexican composer Mario Kuri Aldana, who gave me some hints for its orchestration. The violoncellos accompanied by the other string instruments with sordini in bars 176-185 were his idea.
