You may wonder why I took one of Bach’s best loved pieces and arranged it for five voices rather than the four that he used. There are two reasons. The extra voice allows all the voice leading to follow a more natural flow which brings out the contrapuntal nature of this work. In addition, the extra voice adds richness to the texture.
This piece is not easy, but I believe it is well worth the effort. Special attention must be paid to the dynamics to bring out the individual lines and the intense emotional content. The first violin carries the melody as expected and sings above the others through dynamics and a richness of tone. The second violin, viola and first cello remain legato throughout and allow their melodies to emerge through the dynamics. The second cello contrasts with the other four voices and punctuates the rhythm with a bounce rather than a stress.
