Afterglow is written for a big band jazz ensemble at the
intermediate high school level. Careful attention is paid to avoid high notes that may be out of range for average students. Solos are completely written out, so that performers do not need to improvise. Besides the
standard 17-piece instrumentation, there are parts for flute, clarinet and violin. Also, a part for French horn doubles the 3rd trombone, in case a French horn is available, and there are too few trombones.
