Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
This soulful, powerfully moving, yet nobly restrained spiritual encapsulates the entire story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus as described in the four Gospels of the Bible's New Testament. Spirituals were often expressions of religious faith, although they may also have served as socio-political protests veiled as assimilation to white American culture. Nonetheless, the Christian principles that teach those who suffer on earth hold a special place with God in heaven undoubtedly spoke to the enslaved who saw this as hope and could certainly relate to the suffering of Jesus. For this reason many slaves genuinely embraced Christianity.
This popular Christian spiritual asks the question; �Were you there when they crucified my Lord?� Were you there? In one sense, no; none of us were there. However in another sense, every son of Adam and every daughter of Eve was there. Were you there? Yes we were all there.
