The piece consists of three Aequale proper, with a short prelude and postlude, which act as an enfolding chorale. The three Aequale are all slow and contrapuntal, with a gradual progression of mood from darkness in the first to a kind of resolution, a hint of brightness at the end of the third. The piece is scored for five trombones: alto, two tenors and two bass.
