This beautiful Adagio from Mozart’s Serenade in Bb was used in the movie Amadeus. It was written originally for nine players (2 oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon and 2 horns) although the Serenade was for eleven. This arrangement makes this lovely work available for wind quintet.
The long lines float over the steady rhythmic background allowing all the performers to be featured. Although deceptively simple, this work needs careful attention by all players. Neville Mariner and the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields play it much more slowly but I find that this tempo works much better for the smaller group.
