The first ideas came listening to music by Andrzej Panufnik, who used small cells to base entire works off. Similarly, the opening four notes (concert pitch C-E-C-Db) form the basis of much of this work, with other cells coming into play every now and then.
The reason for the choice of instrumentation is my growing love of Brass Banding, and finding out just what good brass players are capable of doing. I'm sure that this would be a stretch, and there are parts where I'm sure the curses my way would be flying faster than the valves or slides.
