This poem comes from my great grandfather's writings from World War I. The entire piece takes place at the gravesite of a fallen soldier, still in the midst of war. The sights, sounds, and smells of the battlefield are captured with drones and dissonances, while the psychology of war is conveyed through aleatoric (but accessible) micro-polyphony. A fanfare in minor in the lower voices juxtaposes the bravery of soldiers and the patriotism of war with the tragedy of its victims on all sides. After a description of the gravesite and the soldiers and chaplain surrounding it, another section of dissonances builds as the soldiers try to retain their composure, but then explodes into an outpouring of deep sorrow and mourning. A brief section in major describes the soldier's family awaiting his return at home, as the other soldiers think of their own families- this major section is cut short by the realization that their fallen comrade will never make it home. The piece ends with the chaplain's prayer, Hail Mary, while eerie sirens ascend as shepherd tones in the upper voices.
