A Ride in the Dales was written for a college student violinist who was having difficulty with phrasing and expression. The violin answers and imitates short phrases from the piano. Written in simple sonata form, this movement is the first of four which make up The Derbyshire Sonata, first heard on BBC Radio Derby. The other movements, Dovedale, Ripley Market and Buxton Festival, are also available on Score Exchange.
