'A Northumbrian Prelude' arose out of a commission I received for a piece for massed recorders to be played during the opening ceremony of the annual festival of the Society of Recorder Players held in Newcastle upon Tyne in April 1996. I decided the resulting piece was worthy of wider exposure and accordingly expanded it and arranged it for chamber orchestra early in 1997. It was first performed by the Newcastle Youth Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Layton Ring in November 1997.
