FRANZ SCHUBERT

Schubert achieved in the domain of song, masterpieces of insuperable value and absolutely mature beauty. The miracle of Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel and the Earl King composed whilst he was in his teens are amazing monuments to his genius. The celebrated song Ave Maria (Hymne an die Jungfrau) (Hymn to the Virgin) so impressed the Hungarian Pianist and Composer Franz Liszt that he made a piano transcription of it in 1837. In 1823 Schubert composed the Incidental Music Rosamunde von Cypern (Op. 26), but after its first performance the orchestral parts of Schuberts now famous score were tied up and put away in a forgotten corner of a cupboard. Sir George Grove and his friend Arthur Sullivan, then a young man of 25, found the wonderful treasure over forty years later, and set to work to copy out their find.
