Clement Phillibert Leo Delibes (b. St. Germain du Val, n. Le Mans, Feb. 21 1836 d. Paris, Jan. 16 1891)
Pizzicati, from Sylvia
The French composer Leo Delibes attained his greatest fame as a composer of ballets after he made a favourable impression with his music for the ballet La Source (in collaboration with the Polish composer Minkous). His best-known classic ballet Coppelia was composed in 1870, and reveals the characteristic charm and elegance of his style. This successful and celebrated creation enabled him from 1871 to concentrate fully on composition, and in 1876 a further full-scale ballet success Sylvia was composed and received with enthusiasm at its first performance. This led directly to his decoration as a Chevalier of the Legion dHonneur.
