You are purchasing high quality sheet music PDF files suitable for printing or viewing on digital devices. This arrangement is a transcription of my 2016 recording of the Martin Luther hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" (hymn tune "Ein feste Burg") - often referred to as "The Battle Hymn of the Reformation."
The arrangement features some abrupt tempo changes that may take some practice to execute cleanly. Tempo markings shown in the score are the ones I used in my recording of the piece. It is important to keep a solid and consistent tempo in each section, particularly in the sections featuring the left-hand melody and right-hand ostinato. Note that the ostinato switches from a 3/3/2 eighth-note pattern to a 2/2/2/2 pattern when the melody starts, then back to 3/3/2 when the melody pauses. This is much easier to play than maintaining the 3/3/2 pattern throughout, and the casual listener will likely not catch that you have changed the pattern. As an option (or just as a rehearsal challenge), try to keep the 3/3/2 pattern going throughout the verse; you'll probably find this quite difficult to execute against the melody unless you have very well-developed left/right hand independence.
This piece should work well as either a performance number or as a musical reflection at any point in a service. For Protestant denominations, it would be especially appropriate for use on "Reformation Sunday," usually celebrated on the last Sunday of October in US churches.
