JOHN STANLEY (born London 1713;died 1786) Blind from age 2, but became able organist of London churches, his voluntaries attracting other musicians to hear them-including Handel; at Temple Church from 1734; much occupied with management of oratorio series in London; for last 14 years of his life Master of the Band to George III. Composed oratorios, orch. music, chamber music and organ music (some still in use)
