The genesis for this song cycle came from Michael Balaam, sometime Chairman of the Suffolk Singers, a group with whom I have had the privilege of a wonderful working relationship. Michael offered a selection of texts, which form the first, second, third and final sections of the completed cycle - this was later joined by two more texts he liked. The performance date was December 2011 and so a Christmas theme was ideal. There are seven movements in total.
Fleeting God (i) for SATB and piano
A Birthday for SSAA and piano
Break of Day for TBarB and piano
Fleeting God (ii) for SATB and piano
Infant Joy for SSAA and piano
Cradle Song for TBarB and piano
A Salutation for SATB and piano
I have used several devices to link the movements, particularly the notes C, D, E, G and A - their combination as a pentatonic scale but also in repeated chords has provided a useful 'cloud' of sound around which to base the works. Equally I have not stuck rigidly to this harmonic idea at the expense of the compositional process.
Each movement has been led by its words so that the meaning can be supported and lifted by the music.
