Here's some of what we know about Samuel Scheidt's 7 Variations on the French Song: Est-Ce Mars? (Franzosisches Lied: Est-ce Mars?): The song Est-Ce Mars? was one of the top hits of the 17th Century. In 1624 Scheidt published the first of three volumes of keyboard music, entitled Tabulatura Nova. This collection was a tribute to his teacher Sweelinck and he included a series of variations on the same song (Est ce Mars). Earlier, Sweelinck also made a set of 7 variations on this popular melody. This arrangement is very challenging. I think this can be a very effective piece in recital or concert if you rehearse it carefully and keep the energy going. It's such a great tune - the audience is sure to love it.
Note: I also have a Brass Quintet version of this work, also available here on Sibelius Music but. . . beware/caveat emptor: you best have a slide trombonist who can play 16th notes, otherwise, as we used to say at Juilliard c.1982, "You'll bum out, man".
