As the title indicates, Sonatina for Horn and Piano closely follows traditional sonata form on a somewhat smaller scale, with a home key of G minor.
The three movements are:
1. Allegro molto - a short, but fairly strict sonata-allegro in G minor
2. Andante tranquillo - a lyrical theme and variations in F major
3. Allegro moderato - an abridged sonata-rondo in G minor
This composition is thematically very unified, with various thematic connections scattered throughout the three movements, the most obvious one being the first measure of the rondo theme, which is a tonal inversion of the opening six notes of the horn call that begins the sonatina (and yes,
the subtle nod to Siegfried in that motif is deliberate).
